100 year old Centenarian, Don Agustin Jaramillo, poses for me.
The valley that the town of Vilcabamba occupies is known as, "the valley of eternal youth," or "The valley of longevity." This region of the world holds the world record for the most centenarians per capita. The Vilcabamba area has the most ideal climate in the world. It drops down to 60f every night and gets up to 81.5f every days. With clean air, food, and protection from the Andes mountains it is a most desirable habitat. Fruit hangs from the trees for everyone to pic. The people are beautiful. Not the easiest place to get to. Perhaps it should stay that way.

I found this little guy on a hibiscus flower near Vilcabamba, Ecuador. He played games with me for some time. After about an hour of putting myself in back-breaking positions in the early morning, "he" became still enough to pull off a quick photograph. This spider was about the same width as an American .25 cent piece.

Follow The Walters Cultural Arts Center at 527 East Main Street in Hillsboro will host its monthly First Tuesday art exhibit and reception on December 6, 2011 from 6 – 8 p.m. Landscape Now II will feature work from several exceptional regional landscape artists (including this photograph by Douglas Remington) in the upstairs gallery, and West Along the Tualatin from the Westside Quilters Guild on the lower level. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will served by Claeys Catering. Exhibits will be open to the public Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. starting December 6, 2011. Puffy white clouds dance in the mottled light of the San Joaquin valley.

This is one of several images I made on this fine morning. I was visiting my friend, Mohan, in Loja province of Ecuador. There are trails right from his house. I got up at 4:30 in the morning and started hiking up in the Andes in the dark. It can be kind of spooky out there, your headlamp lights up all kinds of creatures eyeballs staring at you. You have to be mindful of fer-de-lance snakes (which will kill you), Ocelots, Banditos (yes robbers!) and a host of other dangers. I climbed about three thousand feet (started at five thousand). The weather was so perfect. I didn't even need a shirt. In addition to this image I was rewarded with quite the light show, which I will share in the near future.

Is it still waterfall Wednesday? ;)

I know this is a popular waterfall to photograph, but today I felt, what the hell, might as well join the club. This falls would be even more popular if it weren't pourly marked roads, being out in the boonies between Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Adams, and you didn't have to drive down a pothole filled gravel road, repel down a slippery rock face with only a flimsy rope, and the fact you are going to fall in the drink while wading out in the icy cold river to get a view similar than this :D

It was all worth getting wet and bruised in the end, for I also came home with 2.6 pounds of Chanterelle mushrooms! That's going to make a great dinner tomorrow night! :)

I got a bunch more comps in the area, but chose my first image to post.

Sorry I have been absent from your streams (from mine as well). Some bad things happened to me and had to get better. More about that on my next post.

This is the very first photo I made in my recent trip to Ecuador. I was traveling on a dangerous mountain road (they pretty much all) somewhere between Catamayo and Loja in the Andes, and there was no shoulder to pull over, but did in spite. Somehow I managed to pull this one off though. I got a couple more of this great light show not far from this spot as well.

Alpine lake in the Elkhorns.

This location was about 5 minutes from my camp. I got set up and realized I left my ND grads at camp, but didn't want to risk the 10 minutes round trip. So I thought I'd just bracket and later manually blend to keep the sky from blowing out. Turns out I only needed one image, the histogram looked good. While processing, I just used a minus exposure graduation for the sky and everything stayed relatively in check :)

So, Tuesday I headed out for a combination of camping, relaxing, and road tripping. I headed out to eastern Oregon to a place special to me, but I never got good light. Just your typical blue sky. Wednesday eve I was able to get a cell signal and checked weather report for the Bend area. Thunderstorms; It's on! Time to pack up and head to Sparks lake. I have got some killer shots from this place before, and so has a lot of other great shooters out there. And it seems that South Sister and Broken-top mountains get the majority of the focus. I never felt however that I got the killer shot of Bachelor, so I focused my attention to the, "great white breast."

I only got maybe an hour of sleep last night, but at 4:20 am I was awoken to distant sounds of thunder. I ran out of my tent, to see these killer thunder clouds building up to the S.W. of Bachelor. I found where I wanted to set up, and just as I got my camera and comp some killer lightning lit off those sweet clouds like the fourth of july before I could capture it! Dammit I thought! Oh well, I knew however, when sunrise comes, those clouds are going to turn into a blissful magic light show. I was not disappointed, and I hope you are not as well. It was a very peaceful and serene setting, and feel to the morning.

I shot some wider views and some really longs exposures to mix it up, however this was my first exposure and my fav thus far.

I recently (early June) had a close encounter with a rattlesnake (not my first). I was enjoying a window of sunshine by a creek in one of my favorite places in the world. Rattlesnakes are not aggressive creatures (despite Hollywood portraying them as such), they are like anything else that feels threatened in some way. They react. I was in rattlesnake country. AND I KNEW IT. I did have a tourniquet and what-not just in case, as always - however. I let my guard down. I am to blame. I was in "HIS" territory (we forget that sometimes). How would you react if someone broke into YOUR home?

I have had so many "close calls" in life. I must say, these incidents are no coincidences, nor are they to be feared by either you or your loved ones. They are a necessary element in your development. They happen for reasons. We often let our emotions cloud our judgments, and I am no exception. Emotions, because they do cloud our judgments, they can control us, or let others manipulate us through known emotional reactions - I digress.

So anyways. I was walking on an off trail location in one of the remotest parts of eastern Oregon (and the lower 48 states). There is no cell phone signals and the only radio signals you can pick up are several AM radio stations that play Rush Limbaugh, and Glen Beck on an endless 24/7 loupe; thank gawd for the freedom of turning it off and embracing the sound of silence! Bottom line; There is no one out there to help you! So, I "always" watch every step I take out there, except this one time. Yup. He was big and threw 2/3rds of his body at me. Dead center and between my legs. My legs somehow managed to go left and right and my pelvic region went backwards and my arms went left and right and I found myself balanced over his body while his spent energy lay right in front and below me; I just about browned my shorts! It felt like some other invisible entity made my body and mind react this fast, I couldn't have, it seems. There is no explanation. If there wasn't an outside force that had power to temporary possession of my physical form I would have fangs and venom somewhere in my being, and that would had been beyond very bad! Whatever the case, I ended up not being harmed and have renewed my carefulness at the same time!

Normally, rattlers such as the great basin species don't get very large in Oregon, but with all the rain we have had there has made more food for them; mice and other unfortunate entities to be found in their swollen bellies and are larger this year than most.

This guy was a magnificent looking creature. As he slithered away he never stopped rattling his tail. It was quite loud and I could hear it for some distance.

Have a happy 4th and don't blow yourselves up with the fireworks!

I foolishly didn't use a nd grad on the one, so the sky is almost blown out, but not quite according to the histogram.

Huka Falls mark the spot where the longest river in NZ, the Waikato is slammed with full force into a narrow chasm, which makes a dramatic 10m drop into a surging pool. The sound of the water from these falls is so powerful! the waikato drains into Lake Taupo, With a surface area of 616 square kilometres (238 sq mi), it is the largest lake by surface area in New Zealand, and the second largest freshwater lake by surface area in geopolitical Oceania after Lake Murray (Papua New Guinea).
Lake Taupo has a perimeter of approximately 193 kilometres, a deepest point of 186 metres. It is drained by the Waikato River (New Zealand's longest river), while its main tributaries are the Waitahanui River, the Tongariro River, and the Tauranga Taupo River. It is a noted trout fishery with stocks of introduced brown trout and rainbow trout.

I shot this with a Zeiss 135mm lens extended 70mm from camera body with mirror locked up. I used natural light with a single soft-white fill reflector. I played around with different depths of field, all the way from f1.7 to f22 and settled on f8. The flower measures one inch across. The inner part of the flower including the stamen looks like candy to me!

Light, what is it? As photographers it is in our interest to know it. But do we? Without light we have nothing, and light literally is EVERYTHING. It is all that there is. The speed of light is assumed to travel at 186, 400 miles per second. However light only seems to travel, it is but an illusion of wave motion. Waves of light do not travel. They reproduce each other from wave field to wave field of space. The planes of zero curvature which bound all wave fields act as mirrors to reflect light from one field to another. This process makes an appearance of light as traveling, which is illusion.

The sunlight we feel upon our being is not light from the Sun. The light and heat which appear to come from the sun have never left the Sun. What really is happening is that the Sun is reproducing its own condition on earth by extending the reproductions out through space (which is intensely cold while in space) into ever enlarging wave fields until those reproductions begin to converge again toward our center of gravity into smaller wave fields. The light we see and the heat we feel are reliant wholly upon the ability of the wave fields to reproduce the heat and light, and that capability is conditioned upon the amount of moisture in the atmosphere.

In the future I will share more knowledge as to WHY light IS everything, well almost everything; it's source is more important.

Sometimes we forget about what's immediately around us, and pack up and leave somewhere for a new photographic experience. It is good to take the effort to see deeper in that what we are familiar with. In essence, this photographic philosophy transfers into our personal relationships; many of which fail because we forget to take a similar notice.

Nothing to dramatic here but I shot this less than a week ago in a field next to my backyard near the Portland west hills. It had rained hard earlier in the day and I just noticed the interesting line and reflection of the fresh mud puddle and went for it. Wide angle, long exposure, and all that mumbo-jumbo.

It was so windy out here this morning that I didn't think it was possible to pull off a single photograph (and the ticks didn't make things easy either!). I had to boost my iso up to 400. Rarely will I shoot faster than 100, but I had no choice. When shooting in these condition, you just have to keep pulling the trigger and hope you get a slight break in the gust. I actually like the mix of some moving flowers and some still ones in this scene, it adds to the feeling of motion. All in all not a very good year for wildflowers in the gorge.

The last photo of my spring, Cali road trip. First time I have ever gotten a successful image from interstate 5. Mt. Shasta, California and lenticular clouds. It was very windy filming this. Shot it resting my camera on a fencepost.

Along the way in my Spring Cali Road trip I found myself in Lake Tahoe. I have never been there before. There was still a lot of snow, but the sky was looking really romantic. This photo was one from original scouting scenes of the day. I really wanted to shoot the Banzai rock area. It was tough to find to say the least. To make things worse I was relying on GPS coordinates from some guy who wrote a blog how to find it with HIS "GPS coordinates." That GPS coordinate wanted to take me 18 miles away from there! Not good! Luckily, I had a back-up GPS provided by, Lisa Feidler, days before. OK, now strike two. Obviously this is not working. I had other "back-ups" however. I had my pose (Lisa Fiedler - live on google earth via my iPhone) , Little M, Rich Capture, Jim Patterson, and I think JaveFoto was helping as well - via Little M as my interpreter) on the horn helping me throughout the little escapade. Success guaranteed, right? Noper! :( I spent hours on this little adventure. I eventually figured out where it was. However, the snow was so thick, and it ate-up the only possible pulling out place within walking distance. In fact it was too dangerous to hike up the road a mile, for you were sure to get hit by one of many carefree drivers in Tahoe.

Plan 2. Eat at a local restaurant, which consisted of nasty catfish tacos that I could only stomach a couple of bites of, and then back to my original location. I got there about an hour and a half before sunset. The icy-blue sky had perfect puffy clouds dancing in her bosom, and I was certain to get my dramatic sky, right? Well, I had a homemade beer to wash the bad taste out of my mouth - and this famished northwest photographer had time to kill, uh huh! Alright fast forward an hour of home brew heaven, I got my gear ready and hiked down to the rocky shore only to see my precious clouds vanish into lake Tahoe thin air! Dammit! I thought, well, I'll just get a little closer comp and hope they come back. As I scrambled upon the snow ridden boulders I soon fell through the snow up to my little chinny chin chin! Luckily had a tripod in hand that I kept above my head and that allowed me to pull myself outta that snow drift and eventually crawl my way to my disappearing sunset resting place. I made several monochrome shots, and then waited for the sun to crest. The Remington fantasy la la land sunset never happened, so I shifted creative gears and decided on a high-key long exposure image.

We often pre-visualize what it is that we hope to get, which is good practice, but when it does not happen, we should be prepared to work in a different manner; often times we get something even better. I'm not convinced this image is better than I hoped for, but I am satisfied with it. More importantly. I am satisfied with the whole experience. If we, as photographers and artist, get tooooo - wrapped up in making the image we hoped for, we often to fail to recognize what is much MUCH BIGGER that the image itself. No image, no matter how grand it can be, will ever replace the experiences along the way of making it. If we get too serious with it, we miss the true lessons of life that are to guide us along our evolutionary journey.

Thanks for all the flickrmail asking for more photos of the man behind the camera. In general I don't care for most photos of myself. But I will post some here and it will be a long time before I do it again, lol!

Some things about myself you might not know. Let's see. I was raised on a farm in western Oregon. Have always been into the arts my whole life. I play guitar. I used to have an exclusive contract with an old large west coast art gallery where I was replacing a prominent landscape photographer. I left that contract early on bad terms. So those missing years of me are because of that. Never ever sign an exclusive contract for a period of time. All promises of marketing your work will not be carried out!

I've also been used as a photographic forensic expert for the state of Oregon. I was a jeweler (yes ladies, diamonds are a huge scam!) and a bladesmith at one time, however I gave those arts up to focus on my photography and school. I'm in a 7 year philosophical and natural sciences school (5 years into it).

Let's see what else? Im the creator of http://www.traditionalmead.com/ and teach fermentation sciences on a regular basis. I nearly died of cancer when I was a child, and have had several close calls out in the wilderness. But here I am stronger than ever. I think that's it for now. Cheers! ~dr

I don't usually do selfies (there's a reason why I am BEHIND the camera, LOL!). This is a 74 original Dodge Dart. It has the original Mopar 318 V8. It's for sale. My last Dart was a 70 Swinger that I dropped a 550 horse 440 magnum that I balanced and blueprinted myself. I set it up for road racing, rather than drag racing, and it would suck the headlights out of a new Vette, not to mention out brake and corner! I had to grow up so I sold it on ebay and some dude had it trucked down to Texas. The first time he drove It, it scared the piss out of him, LOL!

I processed this one with a vintage look.

So after Joshua tree I left for Death Valley with the hopes of capturing a sunset on the great sand dunes. It was still windy all through eastern California. I made it to the dunes, and then looked for a camp site. My plan was to hike about a mile into the dunes and wait for the light. Well as I got close to a mile out the winds picked up very strongly. Pretty soon It was unsafe. I snapped this photo right when it started happening, and packed up. The winds became so strong that I could barely stand up. I had to put clothing over my face to breath and the sky soon grew dark. GPS could not get a signal do to the strong cloud of sand. It was difficult to not panic do to the circumstances and how far I had to hike to get back to my car - with little idea if I was going in the right direction. Somehow I did manage to get back. Obviously, I had to get the hell out of there. So I drove my car out and climbed up the mountains. And when I got to an overview, what I could see was all of Death valley as a huge sandstorm. I drove on westward and stayed the night in Lone Pine (by the famous Alabama Hills in the eastern Sierras.). In the morning my cousin, Paul, who camped with me at Joshua Tree called informed me that the front page of the LA times said that Palm Springs was shut down due to that major sandstorm. People die out in death valley every year, and I'm glad I wasn't one of them!

Taking a quick brake from my Cali road-trip. I know these flowers aren't scotch broom, but if anyone know what they are please let me know. All I know is, I had to climb up a muddy cliff that has sections that were very quick-sand like to get to them. And these little yellow beast have thorns that like to rip you and your stuff up!

So camping out on at Joshua Tree NP was not as fun as usual. Had gail force winds battering my tent all night long, so I didn't sleep at all of course. When I got out of my sleeping bag and tent to go shoot sunrise, I noticed my Cousin Paul bailed out of his tent and was crashed in his Jeep. I took the drive out to the cholla gardens, grabbed gear and started to hike around looking for my comp when all of a sudden I felt a strong "sting" on my right ankle. My immediate reaction was," oh my god, I just got bit by a rattlesnake. To my surprise, I had a nice "cholla ball" imbedded deeply in my ankle. Looks like the strong winds were not going to give me a hall pass. Ok, so try pulling one of these out of your person, it's not easy nor fun! Cholla cactus spines, or needles, have barbs and hooks that are made to never come out of anything. I had no pliers, comb, nothing to get them out. I had to grab my sock around the cholla ball and rip the ball out of my ankle with the sock. Many barbs stayed behind and it was very difficult to pull those out with no tools. So yes, now I had bloody puncture wounds in my hand to boot. And those were yet difficult to pull out as well. In fact, parts of those stingers had to stay behind in my flesh to dissolve naturally. Not sure how I actually photographed this landscape (which I made after the incident) given the circumstance. I made several more as well, and then drove to the nearest town for some first aid. Don't get me wrong it was still worth it and any discomfort I had was only temporary. It could have been worse, that really could have been a rattlesnake instead.

While at Joshua tree national park, I found this lone joshua tree. I light painted it from the right during a 30 second exposure @ 35mm (ffs) That's the Moon in the cradle of the Joshua tree and Venus to the left. After I made the image the winds really kicked up hard to 50 - 70 mph gust and just battered my tent relentlessly all night long and for two more days on my road trip. More to come! :)

Joshua tree national park. I really need a human in here for scale but those boulders are massive. The ones in the background are like 5 story buildings. This is a 108sec exposure. So when I started it, the sunlight was just lighting up the boulders and then it faded to give the sky some color. Thankfull boulders don't move in the wind because there was some very hight wind gust.

Some of you know New Zealand is my favorite place on earth, and the city of Christ Church is right up there. There are some good folks hurting down there, and Kiwis are the friendliest people I have even known. CC just got hit hard by an earth quake. Still trying to get a hold of some friends there. People are dead. I'm pretty sad right now. Anyway, Christ Church Cathedral is one of the prettiest manmade structures I have ever seen, and it has been destroyed. I guess I am fortunate to have photographed her before it happened.

Thoughts are prayers go out to my Cantiburian friends.

This is without a doubt in the top 10 best light shows I have ever photographed, if not in the top 5. We have a nice mixture of rare mammatocumulus clouds and the remnants of crepuscular rays. The scene I knew was so unique that I wanted an ultra-high resolution capture of it so I made 17 exposures and manually stitched them together. I worked fast and luckily the light hung in there as I worked the scene horizontally and vertically with a 70-200 mm lens at 70mm @f6.3. When stitching, I manually set my own control points, so it does take some labor to achieve however the results are that I can blow the image up as big as a house! :) Image made in Verboort Oregon.
